Two Parts, Not One: Pot and Slotted Basket

Most hanging pots are a single moulding. This hanging planter pot is deliberately made in two pieces: an outer pot that holds water and a slotted inner basket that carries the compost, shown separated in the photograph above. The basket lifts out of the pot, which changes how the whole container behaves. Roots reaching the base of the basket are exposed to air through the slots rather than sitting against a solid floor, and the water that drains through collects in the outer pot instead of dropping onto whatever is below.
That separation also makes repotting simple. Lift the basket, tip the plant out, refill and drop it back. There is no need to turn a loaded pot upside down while it is hanging.

Working Out the Load Before You Hang It

The load on the fixing is the weight of the compost, the plant, the water held in the outer pot and the pot itself added together. For a mid-size unit at the top of this range that is a planted weight in the region of several kilograms, rising further after watering. The fixing, not the pot, is the weak link: a hook rated at the planted weight is being used at its limit, which is why the two-fold margin mentioned above is the figure to work to rather than the bare weight of the pot.
Because the outer pot keeps its water below the compost, the load does not change much between one watering and the next, which makes the calculation more predictable than for a pot that drains freely.

Mounting the Pot: Hook, Cord and Where to Fix It

The pot is supplied with a metal hook and cord set that terminates in a single pick-up point. That single point is what you actually fix to the structure, and it is the part that has to be chosen correctly. On a greenhouse frame, the hook goes over a purlin or a truss chord rather than through the covering, so the load is taken by the frame and not by the film or panel. On a timber beam, fix into the side of the member so the hook cannot work its way out as the pot swings; on masonry, use an anchor sized for the planted load rather than a plug chosen by hole diameter alone.
A second practical point: keep the cord length the same across a bay. Mixing lengths makes the row look untidy and, more importantly, puts the watering heads at different heights, so one pot is over-watered while its neighbour stays dry.

Three Applications That Suit This Shape

The first is greenhouse growing, where the pot is hung from the frame above a bench and the inner basket is used for herbs, strawberry runners or trailing ornamentals. The second is commercial display, where the black finish reads as neutral against any shopfront and the two-piece construction means plants can be swapped without replacing the pot. The third is interior planting in atria and entrances, because the outer pot holds the drainage water and does not mark the floor underneath.
In all three cases the same discipline applies: check the fixing, then the cord, then the pot. The container is supplied alongside the wider greenhouse equipment range and is normally ordered with planting tools for a complete planting bay. Where pots hang over working benches, growers commonly pair them with a multi-layer growing bench so overhead and bench zones share one irrigation supply. Protected cropping structures and load guidance are documented by the FAO, and commercial container growing is covered by Greenhouse Grower.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why is this pot made in two pieces rather than one moulding?
A: The slotted inner basket lifts out of the outer pot. Roots at the base of the basket get air through the slots, and the water that drains through collects in the outer pot instead of dropping below.
Q: How do I repot a plant in it?
A: Lift the inner basket out, tip the plant free, refill and drop the basket back into the outer pot. There is no need to turn a loaded pot upside down while it hangs.
Q: Where should the hook be fixed on a greenhouse frame?
A: Over a purlin or a truss chord, never through the covering, so the load is carried by the frame rather than the film or panel. On timber, fix into the side of the member so the hook cannot work loose.
Q: Does the cord length matter across a row?
A: Yes. Keep it the same across a bay so the watering heads sit at one height. Mixed lengths leave one pot over-watered and its neighbour dry.
Q: Can the plant be changed without replacing the pot?
A: Yes, and that is one reason it is used for commercial display. The inner basket is swapped out with the plant while the outer pot stays in position on the cord.
Q: Will it mark a floor indoors?
A: The outer pot holds the drainage water, so run-off does not reach the surface below. It is for that reason the two-piece design is used in atria and entrance planting.
