- Features

On a tunnel greenhouse the film is not a wrapper - it is the cover, and it does three jobs at once: it passes light, it holds some warmth in overnight, and it keeps wind off the crop. Getting the right film and fixing it properly is the difference between a tunnel that works for years and one that flaps, tears and ends up letting rain in at the ridge. The first photo above shows what a working row of tunnels looks like when the cover is right: tight, flat and unbroken from the ridge down to the skirt.
Choosing the Film:
Tunnel covers are polyethylene film, and the decisions that matter are the thickness, the UV treatment and the type. Thicker film costs more and lasts longer, and it stands up better to wind, so a windy site usually pays for the heavier grade over its life. The UV layer is what stops the sheet turning brittle and shattering in the sun; it is co-extruded into the film and its quality is what sets the working life of the cover. Beyond that, film types differ in what they do to the light - a clear film passes the most light, while a diffusing film spreads it and cuts leaf scorch under a hot sun, and a thermal film is formulated to hold more heat overnight. Which one is right depends on your crop and your climate, and it is a question worth asking before you buy a whole tunnel's worth of cover.Fixing the Film: Channels and Battens:
The film is held in aluminium or galvanised channels that run along the hoops, over the ridge and down the end walls, with a spring wire or a batten pressed into the channel over the sheet. This is the part of the build that is most often done badly: a sheet tied down with rope, or fixed with battens and nails, will work loose in the first strong wind and tear at the fixing points. Channel fixing spreads the load along the whole edge instead of at a few points, and it lets you tension the sheet properly - a slack cover is the one that flaps and fails. The channel also makes the cover serviceable, because the wire can be lifted out when the film is replaced.Re-Covering a Tunnel:
A tunnel cover is replaced, not repaired. When the film has gone cloudy, started to crack at the fold lines or lost its strength in the sun, the answer is a new sheet rather than patches - and this is why the cover is the running cost of a tunnel rather than a one-off purchase. Re-covering is straightforward when the channels are sound: the wires come out, the old sheet comes off, the new one is pulled over and tensioned, and the wires go back in. The frame is untouched, and that is exactly how a tunnel is meant to work - a permanent galvanised frame with a cover that is renewed. Keeping the channels and wires in good condition is what makes the renewal a job of a day rather than a rebuild.Sizing, Delivery and Ordering:
Tell us the width and length of the tunnel and the site wind speed, and we will confirm the hoop spacing, the bracing and the film grade to go with it. Film is quoted with the frame, cut to the width of your tunnel and supplied with the channels and wires, and the roll-up skirts are supplied as a complete kit. Normal shipping time is 4 to 6 weeks after receipt of order, plus transit from the factory; 30% of the basic greenhouse price is charged on receipt of order and the balance before shipment. Look through the tunnel greenhouse models and the film greenhouse range they belong to, compare a tunnel with a PC sheet greenhouse if the crop needs a permanent building, read more about our greenhouse factory, call +86 191 5068 3942 or send an E-mail to sales@cngreenhouses.com.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How long does tunnel film last?
A: It depends on the thickness and the UV treatment rather than on a fixed number of years. A cover of this type is renewed when the film has gone cloudy, cracked at the fold lines or lost strength in the sun, so the working life is set by the grade you buy and the sun hours on your site.
Q: Can a torn cover be patched?
A: A small tear can be patched to keep a season going, but the cover is a replaceable part rather than something that is repaired indefinitely. Once the film has gone cloudy or brittle the answer is a new sheet, which is why the cover is the running cost of a tunnel.
Q: How is the film held on, and does it affect how long it lasts?
A: It is held in aluminium or galvanised channels along the hoops, ridge and end walls, with a spring wire or batten pressed over the sheet. Channel fixing matters: it spreads the load along the whole edge, lets you tension the cover properly, and a slack or rope-tied cover is the one that flaps and tears.
Q: Clear film or diffusing film?
A: Clear passes the most light; a diffusing film spreads it and cuts scorch on a hot site; thermal grades are formulated to hold more heat overnight. The right one depends on your crop and your climate - it is worth settling before ordering a tunnel's worth of cover.
Q: Can I re-cover the tunnel myself?
A: Yes, if the channels and wires are sound. The wires come out, the old sheet comes off, the new one is pulled over and tensioned and the wires go back in - the frame is untouched. Keeping the channels in good order is what keeps a re-cover to a day's work.
Q: What do you need from me to quote a tunnel cover?
A: The width and length of the tunnel and your site wind speed. With that we confirm the hoop spacing, the bracing and the film grade, and quote the film cut to the width of your tunnel together with the channels and wires.
