How the Water Circuit Works:
The pads and the fans do the cooling, and the water circuit is what keeps them doing it. A pump lifts water from the tank up to a distribution pipe that runs along the top of the pad. The water spills out along the pipe, runs down the corrugated sheet and wets the whole face of it. What is not evaporated on the way down falls into the trough at the bottom and returns to the tank, so the same water goes round all day and only the evaporated share has to be topped up. Set against a mains-fed spray system, that closed loop is why the running cost of a wet curtain stays low once it is installed. What Comes with the Cooling System:
A cooling system is quoted as a set, not as a roll of pad. It includes the corrugated cellulose pad, the aluminium frame and the water channel that carry it, the distribution pipe above and the trough below, the pump and the tank, the pipework between them, and the axial fans that go in the opposite wall. Because the pad area, the water flow and the fan duty have to work together, they are sized as one system for the house - a larger pad with the wrong fan will not cool as well as a matched pair, and the mismatch is invisible until the first hot week.Water Quality, Scale and Algae:
Two things shorten the life of a pad, and both come from the water. Hard water leaves scale on the sheet, and scale blocks the passages the air and the water are supposed to move through, so the cooling effect falls away while the pad still looks intact. Light and standing water grow algae, which does the same thing from the other direction. Both are managed the same way: keep the tank covered against light, change part of the water rather than topping up the same tank forever, and clean the pad at the end of the season rather than waiting for the passages to close up. A simple filter on the fill line pays for itself on a hard-water site.Keeping It Running Through the Season:
Before the hot season starts, check that the pad is fully wetted top to bottom - dry bands at the top mean the distribution pipe is partly blocked - and that the pump is delivering to the far end of a long pad, not just the near end. Through the season, keep the tank water level up, since a pump that runs dry is the fastest way to lose a motor, and clear any crop or weed growth that has come up in front of the pad, because air has to reach the whole face. Before winter, drain the pipework and the pump if the house is not in use, or the first frost will do the job for you.Sizing a Cooling System for Your House:
Send us the span and the length of the house, the crop you plan to grow and your summer temperature and humidity, and we will size the pad, the water flow and the fans as one set. The system sits alongside the rest of the greenhouse equipment range we build - shading to cut the load before the pad has to deal with it, and circulation fans to even the cooled air out across the crop. It can be fitted to a polycarbonate house or a film house on the same basis, and it is quoted together with the greenhouse accessory range, the greenhouse irrigation and the structure. Q: Does the cooling system use a lot of water?
A: No. The water runs in a closed loop - pump, distribution pipe, pad, trough, tank - and only the water that actually evaporates off the pad has to be replaced. On a normal day that is a small top-up rather than a continuous flow.
Q: What is included with the cooling system?
A: The corrugated cellulose pad, the aluminium frame and water channel, the distribution pipe above, the trough below, the pump, the tank, the pipework between them, and the axial fans for the opposite wall. Pad, water flow and fan duty are sized together for your house.
Q: Why does the pad stop cooling after a couple of seasons?
A: Almost always scale or algae. Scale from hard water blocks the passages in the sheet and algae grows in light and standing water. Keep the tank covered, change part of the water instead of topping the same tank up forever, and clean the pad at the end of the season.
Q: Can I clean the pad, or does it have to be replaced?
A: It can be cleaned. Flush it from the top and clear the passages gently; what damages a pad is letting scale set hard over several seasons, so cleaning at the end of each season is far easier than rescuing it later.
Q: What happens to the system over winter?
A: Drain the pipework and the pump if the house is not running through the winter. Water left standing in a pump body or a pipe will freeze and split it, and that is a repair that costs far more than the ten minutes it takes to drain the circuit.
Q: Can the cooling system be added to an existing greenhouse?
A: Yes, if the frame can take the pad wall and the fans. Tell us the span, the length, the cover you have and your summer conditions, and we will confirm what the house needs before quoting the system.
