Hot dip galvanized pipe:

Hot dip galvanizing is still the most widely used corrosion protection method for steel, and hot dip galvanized steel pipe is one of its largest product families. Because the coating lasts for decades without repainting, the process has been adopted far beyond horticulture: transmission and communication towers, railway and highway guardrail protection, lamp posts, marine structures, construction steel components, ancillary facilities of substations and light industry all rely on it. The sections below explain how the coating is applied, why it holds up, what the seven practical advantages are, and exactly which parameters you need to tell us to place an order.

How the galvanized coating is applied:

The pipe is first degreased and pickled to remove oil, scale and rust, then fluxed and immersed in a bath of molten zinc at roughly 450 °C. The zinc reacts with the steel surface and forms a zinc-iron alloy layer, which is a metallurgical bond rather than a painted-on film. Because the whole section is immersed, the coating covers the inside and outside walls at the same time, including hollow sections, sharp corners and recessed areas. Coating mass is specified under BS EN ISO 1461, the international standard for hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles; for greenhouse frame tube the usual specified range is 70 to 85 µm average zinc thickness. The pipes shown above are straight lengths as they leave our works — no threading, no end caps, no field painting.

Corrosion life by environment (ISO 9223):

The service life of a galvanized coating is not one fixed number — it depends on the corrosivity of the site. ISO 9223 and BS EN ISO 14713-1 classify the atmosphere from C1 to C5 and give the expected time to first maintenance for a standard coating: industrial atmosphere (class C4) about 13 years · urban conditions (class C3) about 30 years · coastal conditions (class C5) about 50 years · clean suburban conditions (class C2) 50 years or more without repair. Please note this is the coating life under ISO 9223. The steel structure itself is designed for 15-20 years of structural service and is backed by a 10-year structural warranty. The warranty, the structural design life and the coating life are three separate things — please do not read one as the other.

Advantage:

1. Durable: in a clean suburban environment the standard hot dip galvanized coating gives 50 years or more without repair; in urban or coastal areas the same coating keeps roughly 20 to 30 years to first maintenance. These figures follow the ISO 9223 corrosion classes set out above — they are not a warranty period.

2. Good reliability, galvanized layer and steel is metallurgical combination between, become a part of the steel surface, thus the durability of the coating is more reliable.

3. The toughness of the coating is strong: galvanized layer to form a kind of special metallurgical structure, this structure can withstand the mechanical damage when transporting and using.

4. Comprehensive protection: each section of the plated parts can zinc plating, even in the cavity, sharp corners and hidden can be fully protected.

5. Save time and effort: galvanized process faster than other coating construction method, and can avoid the time needed for installation at the site after brushing.

6. Low initial cost: in general, the cost of the hot-dip zinc is lower than on other protective coating, the reason is very simple, other protective coating, such as sand and paint is labor intensive, and hot dipping zinc process for high mechanization, tightly controlled plant construction.

7. Simple test: hot-dip zinc layer can be visual and simple nondestructive thickness test table. We are factory professional in hot dip galvanized metal for above 35 years.Every year we ship out big quantity of HDG products. We Warmly welcome your inquiry!

Specifications you can order:

This tube is produced as structural hollow section, so the dimensional range follows BS EN 10219 (cold formed welded structural steel hollow sections). Typical figures for greenhouse frame tube:
· Outside diameter: 21.3–219.1 mm, round section. Square and rectangular hollow sections are also available — our galvanized pipe selection guide sets out which standard applies to each section type.
· Wall thickness: 1.5–12 mm, welded seam, hot dip galvanized after welding.
· Standard lengths: 5.8 m and 6 m, or cut to your drawing.
· Steel grade: structural steel to BS EN 10219-1.
· Coating: hot dip galvanized to BS EN ISO 1461, 70–85 µm average, inside and outside.

How to specify your order:

To quote accurately we need four things: the outside diameter and wall thickness, the cut length, the quantity, and the corrosion class of your site. The last one decides the coating thickness we specify, because ISO 9223 works the other way round as well — a salt-spray coastal site in class C5 needs a heavier zinc layer than an inland site in class C2. If you are building a frame rather than buying loose tube, our hoop house frame tube page shows how the same pipe is made up into a complete arch set. Trained installers are not required to fit the pipe itself, but bending, drilling and cutting must be done before galvanizing where a cut edge would otherwise be left bare. Greenhouses also need air movement and water, so the pipe is normally ordered alongside our greenhouse ventilation and drip irrigation system packages.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How long does a hot dip galvanized steel pipe last in a greenhouse frame?
It depends on the corrosivity of your site, not on a single fixed figure. Under ISO 9223 and BS EN ISO 14713-1 a standard coating gives about 13 years in a C4 industrial atmosphere, about 30 years in C3 urban conditions, about 50 years in C5 coastal conditions, and 50 years or more without repair in C2 clean suburban conditions.

Q: Is the pipe galvanized on the inside as well as the outside?
Yes. Hot dip galvanizing is a full immersion process, so the zinc covers the outside wall, the inside bore, the weld seam and the cut ends in one pass. The 70–85 µm average coating we quote to BS EN ISO 1461 refers to both surfaces.

Q: What diameters and wall thicknesses can you supply?
For round structural tube we work to BS EN 10219: outside diameter 21.3–219.1 mm, wall thickness 1.5–12 mm, in 5.8 m and 6 m standard lengths or cut to your drawing. Square and rectangular sections are available on request.

Q: Can the pipe be cut and drilled before it is shipped?
Yes, and for a greenhouse that is the sensible order of work. Cutting, drilling and bending are done before galvanizing so that every cut edge is sealed by zinc. If you cut a galvanized pipe on site the exposed steel at the cut should be repaired with a zinc-rich coating.

Q: Do you produce the pipe yourselves, or buy it in?
We manufacture in our own factory rather than trading. Ziyang Bozong Greenhouse Industry Co., Ltd has more than 35 years in greenhouse production, with 180,000 square metres of workshop and 378 staff, and we export to over 32 countries.

Q: What is the minimum order quantity for galvanized greenhouse pipe?
Because every greenhouse is a custom project, the minimum order quantity is 1 set. Loose tube ordered to a cut list is quoted separately, so send us the diameter, wall thickness, length and quantity and we will price it for you. We accept T/T and L/C, and production normally takes about 1 month after the deposit is received.
