Bundled hot dip galvanized steel pipes for scaffolding and structure in a steel yard

BS1139, EN 39 and EN 10219 Galvanized Pipe:

Our galvanized steel pipe is produced to three European and British standards, so buyers can order by the specification their project already uses. BS 1139 covers steel tubes for scaffolding, EN 39 covers loose steel tube for tube-and-coupler scaffolds, and EN 10219 covers cold formed welded structural hollow sections. Tubes are hot dip galvanized after welding, giving a zinc coating inside and outside of the tube rather than only on the outer wall.

Typical outside diameters run from 21.3 mm to 219.1 mm with wall thickness from 1.5 mm to 12 mm, and standard lengths are 5.8 m, 6 m or cut to the length named in the order. Please send the standard number, outside diameter, wall thickness and length you need, and we will confirm the drawing and the weight per bundle before production.

Where the pipe is used:

Around half of the galvanized steel pipe we ship leaves the factory as greenhouse structure, because a commercial greenhouse frame is built from the same cold formed tube. The remaining volume goes into tube-and-coupler scaffolds, guard rails, handrails, sign posts, drainage and culvert lines, and general structural steelwork where the part will sit outdoors for decades without repainting.

Growers who buy our pipe together with the covering and the control systems usually start from the multi-span greenhouse range, while buyers who only need the steel can order the pipe on its own from our hot dip galvanized pipe range and match it to their own structure drawing. Both routes are quoted the same way.

Advantages of hot dip galvanized pipe:

1. Durable: hot dip galvanizing needs no site painting. Coating life follows the corrosivity categories of ISO 9223 and BS EN ISO 14713-1: in a clean suburban setting (class C2) the standard coating gives 50 years or more without repair, while in urban or coastal air (class C3 to C5) it still holds around 20 to 30 years to first maintenance.

2. Good reliability: the zinc layer and the steel form a metallurgical bond, so the coating becomes part of the steel surface and its durability is not dependent on adhesion alone.

3. Tough coating: hot dip galvanizing forms a special metallurgical structure that resists the mechanical damage that happens during transport, handling and site assembly.

4. Full coverage: every section of the plated part is coated, so cavities, sharp corners and hidden faces are protected as well as the outside wall.

5. Saves time on site: galvanizing is faster than other coating methods and removes the on-site brushing and touch-up work that painting a frame would need.

6. Low initial cost: hot dip galvanizing is usually cheaper than an equivalent protective coating because sanding and painting are labour intensive, while the dipping line is highly mechanized and tightly controlled.

7. Simple inspection: coating thickness can be checked visually and with a non-destructive thickness gauge, so a buyer or a third-party inspector can verify the order without cutting a sample.

How to specify your order:

Send four items and we can quote the same working day. First the standard (BS 1139, EN 39 or EN 10219). Second the outside diameter and wall thickness. Third the length, either a fixed length or a random length range. Fourth the quantity in metres, pieces or tonnes, plus the destination port so we can quote the freight correctly.

The tube is packed in bundles with steel strapping, and bundle weight is kept inside the limits your port allows. Further greenhouse steel and fittings are listed under greenhouse accessories, and the wider equipment list sits in the greenhouse equipment section.

The scaffold tube standard is published by NGMA and the trade press keeps an eye on how tube and coating prices move each season, for example HortWeek.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is the difference between BS 1139, EN 39 and EN 10219 pipe?
A: BS 1139 and EN 39 are scaffold tube standards, with EN 39 applying to loose steel tube used with couplers. EN 10219 is the standard for cold formed welded structural hollow sections, so it covers tube used as a permanent structural member rather than as scaffolding. We produce all three, and each one is hot dip galvanized after welding.

Q: Can you supply galvanized pipe in the exact diameter my structure drawing shows?
A: Yes. Outside diameter runs from 21.3 mm to 219.1 mm and wall thickness from 1.5 mm to 12 mm. Send the standard, the diameter, the wall thickness and the length, and we will confirm what we can roll to your drawing before you commit to the order.

Q: Is the inside of the tube galvanized as well as the outside?
A: Yes. Because the tube is dipped whole after welding, the zinc reaches the bore, the cut ends and the weld seam rather than only the outer face. That is what allows the pipe to be used for drainage and culvert lines without an extra internal coating.

Q: What is your minimum order quantity?
A: Our pipe is produced against the order, and the minimum order quantity is 1 set of the specification you choose. We can also combine pipe with a greenhouse structure in one shipment if that suits your project.

Q: What is your delivery time?
A: Around 1 month after we receive the deposit. Because every order is produced to the customer's own specification, the exact schedule is confirmed in the contract before production starts.

Q: Which countries do you export the pipe to?
A: We export to more than 32 countries, including Russia, the UAE, Kuwait, Nicaragua, Canada, Chile, South Africa and Uzbekistan. We ship worldwide, and we will quote to your named port.
