Growing Bench - Multi-Layer Rolling Bench for Seedlings
Multi-layer growing bench for seedlings and hydroponics: galvanised frame, mesh tray surface and a hand wheel to move the rows. .

Rolling seedling bench with trays of young green seedlings on a mesh surface in a propagation house

The multi-layer growing bench is the part of a propagation house that decides how many plants you can raise in the space you have. It is a galvanised steel bench that carries trays or pots on a mesh surface, stacked in layers rather than laid out on the floor, and it is built to be used year after year in a wet house where the irrigation runs every day.

Frame, Trays and the Rolling Base:

The bench is a hot dip galvanized steel frame with uprights, cross members and a mesh tray surface, and it is sized to the trays you actually use so the surface is not wasted. What you can see in the photo above is the detail that does most of the work: a hand wheel on the side of the frame, driving the bench along a rail. One wheel moves a whole row, which means a single working aisle can serve the rows on both sides of it instead of one - on the same floor area you get the growing space of two houses' worth of fixed benches. The frame takes the weight of trays, wet growing media and a crop, so the uprights and the rail are sized for that load rather than for a display bench.

Why Grow Up Rather Than Out:

Raising seedlings on the floor uses the footprint of the house once. Stacking the benches uses the same footprint two or three times, and it puts the crop at working height so you are not bending over every tray. In a propagation house this is usually the cheapest way to increase output: the structure, the cover and the climate system are already paid for, and the extra capacity comes from how the space above the floor is used. It also keeps the crop off the concrete, which is better for airflow around the trays and easier to keep clean. Where a house is already built and the target is simply more seedlings per season, the bench is normally the first thing to add.

Water, Drainage and Air:

A bench is only as good as what happens to the water that leaves the tray. The mesh surface lets surplus water through instead of ponding around the roots, and the frame is laid out so that the run-off is collected below and taken back to the tank rather than dropped on the floor. That is what makes the bench work with greenhouse irrigation - overhead booms, drip lines or ebb and flow all sit comfortably on a bench of this type. Galvanized steel is the right material for the frame because it is the one part that is permanently wet, and the open mesh means air moves under the trays as well as over them, which is what keeps damping-off and algae down in a full house.

Sizing and Ordering:

Tell us the tray size you use, how many trays a season you need to raise, the length of run available in the house and whether you want the rows fixed or on a rolling base with a hand wheel. From that we set the bench width, the number of layers and the run length, and quote the benches together with the rest of the greenhouse accessory range and the irrigation that feeds them. Benches are usually shipped with the house rather than added later, because the rail and the aisle width are planned with the structure. Look through the commercial greenhouse range and the PC sheet greenhouses they are normally fitted into, read more about our greenhouse factory, call +86 191 5068 3942 or send an E-mail to sales@cngreenhouses.com.

We have supplied growers and project contractors across Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and Latin America for many years. Notes on propagation and nursery practice are published by organisations such as the USDA, and commercial greenhouse trade news is reported by Greenhouse Grower.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How many layers should a growing bench have?
A: It depends on the light at the bottom layer and the height of the house. Two or three layers is the usual range for seedlings under glass or PC sheet. We set the number from your tray height and the house height so the lowest layer still gets usable light.
Q: What does the hand wheel do?
A: It drives the whole row along its rail. That lets a single working aisle serve the rows on both sides instead of one, so the same floor area carries about twice the bench length of fixed benching.
Q: Where does the water go?
A: The mesh surface lets surplus water through instead of ponding around the roots, the run-off is collected below the frame and returned to the tank rather than dropped on the floor. That is what lets the bench work with overhead booms, drip lines or ebb and flow.
Q: Can the benches be fitted into a greenhouse I already have?
A: Yes, provided the run length and the aisle width are planned around the existing house. Send us the internal dimensions and the tray size you use and we will work out the bench width, the number of layers and the run.
Q: What is the frame made of?
A: Hot dip galvanized steel, because this is the part of the house that is permanently wet. The uprights, cross members and rail are sized for the weight of trays, wet growing media and a standing crop, not for a display bench.
Q: Are the benches shipped with the greenhouse?
A: Normally yes. The rail and the aisle width are planned together with the structure, so specifying the benches with the house is cheaper and simpler than retrofitting them into a finished building.
